The Must-Know Basics of Neurotoxins

Jul 15, 2022

As we age, our skin changes. Wrinkles may start to form more often, and the lines and creases you see when you smile, squint, or laugh become more pronounced. The good news is that there are ways to relax these areas to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

One common and effective approach is the usage of neurotoxins. What are neurotoxins? They are injectable substances that temporarily affect the normal function of nerve cells.

Neurotoxins, such as Botox, are frequently used to treat dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle movement, such as smiling or winking.

How do neurotoxins work?

When neurotoxins (for example, Botox) are injected into your wrinkles, they block nerve impulses to your muscles, causing them to relax. When your muscles are relaxed, you won’t experience dynamic facial wrinkles when you frown, smile, squint, or laugh. Instead, your face will appear much smoother and more refreshed, and you’ll have a more youthful appearance.

Does it hurt?

Most people do not feel any significant discomfort when receiving injections. That’s because neurotoxins, like Botox, are typically injected with a very small needle. This fine needle is barely noticeable, and you are likely to only feel a slight stinging sensation if you feel anything at all.

The neurotoxin injection process also often involves prepping the area with a topical numbing cream and an ice pack is used after the injection. These measures help ensure you feel minimal pain or discomfort during the process.

How long does it last?

While neurotoxins are a very effective way to smooth wrinkles and reduce their appearance, the results are not permanent.

A common question is “How long does Botox last?” and the answer is that it depends on the person. In general, you can expect the effects of Botox to be visible for about four to five months.

Results, however, vary from person to person. For example, Botox effects may be visible for a longer time in people with skin with more elasticity, who practice good skin care, and who have had Botox before. The effects of your first treatment will usually wear off sooner than subsequent treatments.

What can I expect after my appointment?

It typically takes at least 24 to 48 hours to start seeing the effects of a neurotoxin injection. Your muscles must absorb the substance for it to be effective, and that usually does not happen immediately.

You may feel some slight tenderness or mild bruising following your treatment, but this discomfort will quickly subside.

For approximately 24 hours after receiving your injections, you should avoid massaging or touching the treated areas. Doing so could cause the neurotoxins to spread to other parts of your face and create an unintended effect.

It is also a good idea to wait at least 24 hours before exercising since this could increase the risk of bruising in the area and, in some cases, lead to headaches. You can safely resume other daily activities following your treatment.

What is the ideal age to start using neurotoxins?

While many people who get neurotoxins do so when they get older, the ideal age to start using them is in your late 20s. That’s because neurotoxins can’t actually eliminate wrinkles - they simply reduce their appearance. If you begin neurotoxin injections earlier, you will address wrinkles and fine lines before they become more pronounced.
